A Weekend Away at Mitchelton Hotel

Adding to Victoria’s ever-growing ‘Winery Hotel’ experience comes Mitchelton Hotel; a welcomed addition to the Goulburn Valley region, and a refreshing update to the well-established Mitchelton Winery Estate.

A true gem in the heart of Victoria’s wine country, getting there is simple; just a leisurely drive 90 minutes from Melbourne’s CBD. For all the thrill-seekers out there, there's no better way to venture to your next getaway but with the roof down on a sleek convertible. Lucky for us, we had the all new Mazda MX-5 RF at hand; the world's favourite sports car.

Upon arrival (which is done in style, thanks to the zippy Mazda MX-5 RF), you are greeted by an intertwining road that showcases the true beauty of the Mitchelton estate and its vineyard. The hotel itself is quite simple yet enriched with thoughtful - and creative - design, thanks to internationally renowned architecture and interior design firm ‘Hecker Guthrie’.

The minimal, boutique hotel comprises of 58-stunning rooms with either a ‘river’ or ‘vineyard’ view, with personal amenities including a spa and wellness centre, and an impressive infinity pool; personifying laid-back luxury at its best.

A personal project seen to fruition by owners/ father-son duo Gerry and Andrew Ryan, Mitchelton Hotel cleverly weaves design, gastronomy and of course, viniculture into its humble surroundings for all wine, food and travel enthusiasts alike to enjoy.

Yet, there’s an aspect of ‘realism’ to the Mitchelton experience that is unlike any other. Set on the banks of the Goulburn River, it’s hard to replicate the iconic Australian bush setting; dominated by red gums and native grasslands. It’s this notion that promotes a feeling of a home away from home, as opposed to a swanky retreat.

Don’t get us wrong, though; the hotel is sheer class. The rooms are spacious and minimal, baring a clear relationship with its country setting. It is these country roots that are reflected in each room; specifically in the artwork selected for the space, which includes rare commissioned pieces by Melbourne photographer Trevor Mein.

For those looking to wet the whistle, the cellar door is a great starting place. Greeted by wine experts, you can run through a range of popular wines that make up Mitchelton’s legacy; such as the signature Print Shiraz, or the vintage 2011 Riesling. For a refreshing drop during the warmer months, the Preece Grenache Rosé (an ode to founding Mitchelton winemaker, Colin Preece) is simply delightful.

The flagship restaurant, The Muse, features an awe-inspiring regional North-Victorian menu, helmed by executive chef, Dan Hawkins (formerly Longrain, Newmarket, Acland St Cantina). Showcasing premium - and at times difficult to get - farm-to-table produce, provenance is ensured when sourcing and preparing each meal for The Muse menu.

For me, cooking is all about provenance. That’s one of the reasons why I love cooking in this amazing part of the world. I like to feel connected to the land where we source our food.

On any given day or night, guests can expect a unique meal in a quaint setting overlooking the Goulburn River. Tuck into a hearty ribeye steak with Gembrook potatoes and house made béarnaise, or tasty Murray Cod from the region. The friendly sommelier will match your wine to your meal, accordingly.

Mitchelton Hotel has successfully made the transition from a friendly vineyard and cellar door, to a truly desirable staycation in country Victoria. So, what are you waiting for? Relax, unwind and immerse yourself in the tranquil adventure that awaits at Mitchelton Hotel.
