For this Fathers Day, I sat down with the crew over at Benjamin Barker to talk about my real life superhero - my dad. Here's an excerpt from the interview:
BB: Tell us about your dad.
SW: “Richard’s a real estate agent and he supports the Melbourne Demons. One of his favourite things to do is to take family walks around the mountains near our family home in Olinda.”
BB: What's a special memory that you have of your dad?
SW: “My dad used to always read books with me every night when I was a kid, he would keep reading until I fell asleep. As a child it’s not something that you can fully appreciate, looking back now I realise how lucky I was to have a father like him!”
BB: What do you and your dad like to do together?
SW: “Ever since I can remember, dad’s been taking me to the footy to watch the Melbourne Demons play. We have our reserved member seats and try to go every week that the footy doesn’t clash with either of our schedules.”
BB: How has your dad influenced or inspired you?
SW: “Dad has always been someone I looked up to. I’d have to say that his genuine kindness towards others was something that really resonated with me. I have to admit though, when I was younger I found some of my father’s antics to be quite embarrassing. After a while I realised that, intentional or not, the terrible dad jokes and the myriad other embarrassing things that he would do around me taught me quite a good life lesson – be yourself and don’t worry about what other people think of you. Unfortunately, I think his sense of humour (or lack thereof) and mischievous behaviour has rubbed off on me.”
BB: What do you think of your dad's style?
SW: “Look, he’s no Tom Ford. But I have to admit, after seeing photos of him back in the 70s and 80s, the man did know how to rock a pair of flares. Credit where credit’s due. Aside from that, my dad has got back into fashion a touch more now that I have started to wear suits more often. ”
BB: If your grandfather were a superhero, who would he be?
SW: “Definitely ‘Dad Joke Man’”
BB: Complete the sentence: When I grow up, I want to be…
SW: “As loving as my dad.”
